I'd pull the #1 plug, insert a 1 foot long 1/4' diameter (or so) wooden dowel rod and by the balancer bolt turn the engine over by hand. Note: an overheating engine, even if you do have a coolant flow issue, should not exhibit glowing exhausts. Assuming you have a good balancer where the outer ring has not slipped, it sounds 1st that the timing is way retarded. Keep in mind that Ford over the long span of the Windsor's life made tons of changes to the front cover and the location of the timing pointer on that cover. going back to you 1st post with glowing red parts, that's usually a function of badly retarded timing. To quote: 'Would a mismatch of these parts stop water getting around the system?'. It is odd that since with lots of air bleeds one should get coolant up into the engine. Still, I'm not sure that's your real/only issue.

I do wish I could remember the impact of using the wrong parts in the pre-65 5-bolt engine but it's been a l-o-n-g time! That would not make much if any difference IMO. But, in the link above, by backing plate I'm assuming your talking about the round disk riveted to the back of the impeller. If the wrong pump won't bolt up to a mismatched timing cover, I need to look elsewhere for the problem. I guess what I need to know is, is it possible to fit the wrong water pump to the timing cover? The pump/cover combo I have has bolted up fine, but I don't know if the internals are working together properly. I have to say this has driven me nuts for two days now. I still can't see why the choice of water pump could stop the coolant getting around the engine on fill up! There are air bleeds everywhere, and I've tried disconnecting hoses etc. Bob Mannel's book tells me that in '65 pump and cover changed, and that you have to use the correct cover with the correct pump, but I can't work out what the differences are. I can't find out easily what pump fits this properly. It doesn't have quite the same gasket surfaces as the one in your post, but is listed as for early cars and has a C4OE number cast on it. With this, I'm using a Flowkooler high flow water pump, PN 1680, which doesn't use a backing plate and is listed as for hipo only. I have a new Scott Drake early-type repro timing cover, C4AZ-6019-A (SD's number - it has 'C4OE-6059A' embossed on it), which has the hollowed-out type space for the water pump to fit to. It seems the coolant is not getting around the system, probably not into the block, hence the extreme engine heat. There is a bleed screw in the top hose which I have removed - only air in there. I can fill the tank to the top, but the radiator top hose stays empty, despite being lower. The outlet pipe connects to the lower outlet from the water pump, usually for a heater, and the breather/bleeder pipe goes to the top of the radiator. It has one outlet pipe and one breather pipe. The Cobra uses a remote header tank, which is higher than everything else, and is the only place to fill the system. I've had to quit because the motor is getting extremely hot - bright red manifolds and down the headers - and it's not just timing or mixture.

It's a 5-bolt, with as original a setup as I can get it - correct date code 4100, Compcams Nostalgia 271 solid lifter cam etc. I'm trying to do the cam break-in on the 289 in my Cobra. Hoping someone can help here - it's very confusing!
